Greetings everyone, I’m Nakia Avery, one of the school counselors for Norman and Sims. I am a mom of a blended family of eight. I have volunteered in the community with children with needs, taught sports, dance and good moral behavior since I was 14 years old. I entered education as a college instructor teaching at a maximum security facility. I have been in the public school system for six years working with both special needs and general education students. My name is Stephanie Arellanes and I am a bilingual counselor at Norman-Sims Elementary. I have a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Texas State University and have been working with students in the Austin area since 2015. I strive to ensure all students feel safe and confident in their school environment by providing them with a variety of support throughout the school year. As an El Paso native who now calls Austin home, I am proud to be a part of the Norman-Sims community. 
 
Mi nombre es Stephanie Arellanes y soy consejera bilingüe en la escuela Norman-Sims. Tengo una Maestría en Artes en Consejería Profesional de Texas State University y he estado trabajando con estudiantes en el área de Austin desde 2015. Me esfuerzo por asegurar que todos los estudiantes se sientan seguros y confiados en su entorno escolar, brindándoles diferentes tipos de apoyo durante todo el año escolar. Como nativa de El Paso que ahora llama a Austin su hogar, estoy orgullosa de ser parte de la comunidad de Norman-Sims.
 

Professional School Counselor:

The PSC assists all students to develop their academic, career, personal, and social abilities.

 

Guidance Curriculum:

The counselor meets with students directly in their classrooms on a weekly basis to help develop social and emotional skills. Examples of activities include conflict resolution, healthy habits, team building, character education, peer pressure, career, and communication. All classroom lessons are designed based on classroom needs.

 

Responsive Services:

The counselor provides individual assistance to students when a problem or concern is affecting theirrelationships and/or educational achievement. Individual counseling is limited to 1-3 meetings. The counselor holds small groups with students who share similar concerns.

 

Individual Planning:

The counselor assists students with transitions to middle school, goal setting, classroom behavior support and resources to parents for students’ needs.

 

System Support:

The counselor supports the students’ educational achievement in partnership with parents and staff through
consultation. This includes coordinating with the Parent Support Specialists, Communities in Schools, VIDA Clinic, and other mentoring partnerships. 

 
Confidentiality Policy:
We respect the right to confidentiality of students, parents, teachers and other school staff. Situations jeopardizing student safety including incidents of abuse, imminent danger to self or others, and bullying are reported to the campus administrator in accordance with school policy.
 
Special Programs:
PALS- The Austin ISD PALS program enables young people to use their potential to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others. Serving as student mentors to younger peers, PALS build tolerance and community-mindedness in their schools and communities.
 
No Place for Hate- No Place for Hate® also helps to create and sustain inclusive school environments where all students feel valued and have the opportunity to succeed by promoting respect for individual difference while challenging bigotry and prejudice.
 
Consejera escolar profesional:
La consejera ayuda a todos los estudiantes a desarrollar sus habilidades académicas, profesionales, personales y sociales.
 
Curriculo de guia :
La consejera se reúne con los estudiantes directamente en sus salones de clase para ayudar a desarrollar las habilidades académicas, profesionales, personales y sociales. Ejemplos de actividades incluyen resolución de conflictos, hábitos saludables, trabajo en equipo, educación del carácter, presión de grupo, carrera y comunicación. Todas las lecciones en la clase están diseñadas según las necesidades.
 
Servicios receptivos:
La consejera brinda asistencia individual a los estudiantes cuando un problema o inquietud está afectando su rendimiento educativo. El asesoramiento individual está limitado a 1-3 reuniones. La consejera también puede reunirse con pequeños grupos de estudiantes que comparten preocupaciones similares.
 
Planificación individual:
La consejera ayuda a los estudiantes con las transiciones a la escuela intermedia, el establecimiento de objetivos, el apoyo al comportamiento en el aula y los recursos para los padres para las necesidades de los estudiantes.
 
Sistemas de soporte:

La consejera apoya el logro educativo de los estudiantes en asociación con los padres y el personal a través de consultas. Por ejemplo con la especialistas de padres y familias, Communities in Schools, clinica de VIDA.

 
Política de confidencialidad:
Respetamos el derecho a la confidencialidad de los estudiantes, padres, maestros y otro personal escolar. Las situaciones que ponen en peligro la seguridad de los estudiantes, incluidos los incidentes de abuso, peligro inminente para sí mismo o para otros, y la intimidación se informan al administrador del campus de acuerdo con la política escolar.
