At Norman-Sims, we are committed to educating the whole child. In addition to our robust program of core academics, we also provide special areas classes in music, art and physical education.
Accelerated Reader Program
A computer-based program that schools may use to monitor reading practice and progress. It helps teachers guide students to books that are on the child's individual reading level. Students take short quizzes after reading a book to check if they've understood it.
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Daily Morning Meetings
Morning Meeting is an engaging way to start each day, build a strong sense of community, and set children up for success both socially and academically. Each morning, in every classroom across Norman-Sims, students and teachers start their day in a circle for 15 to 20 minutes to build community, relationships and social-emotional skills:
- Greeting: Students and teachers greet one other by name.
- Sharing: Students share information about important events in their lives. Listeners often offer empathetic comments or ask clarifying questions.
- Group Activity: Everyone participates in a brief, lively activity that fosters group cohesion and helps students practice social and academic skills (for example, reciting a poem, dancing, singing, or playing a game).
- Morning Message: Students read and interact with a short message written by their teacher. The message is crafted to help students focus on the work they’ll do in school that day.
At Norman-Sims, we are proudly "one-to-one!"
